최고의 영국 Soap Opera에 EastEnders

Soap opera 하면 특정 장소에 살고 있는 한 사람들의 그룹 속에서 벌어지는 일상사를 다루는 드라마인데, 아마 우리나라 일일 연속극 정도로 보시면 될겁니다.

영국 TV에서 방영되는 soap oprera에는 유명하고 오랫동안 방영중인 것들이 있는데 BBC 방송의 EastEnders와 ITV의 Coronation street, Emmerdale이 있습니다.

최근에 열린 British Soap Awards에서 EastEnders가 경쟁작인 Cornation street를 물리치고 7개의 상을 받았다는군요.

Coronation street는 5개, Emmderdale은 3개의 상을 받았습니다.

best actor에는 EastEnders에서 Alfie Moon 역할을 맡고 있는 Shane Richie가 best actress에는 Coronation street에서 Karen McDonald를 맡고 있는 Suranne Jones가 받았습니다.

Best exit: Sheree Murphy (Tricia Dingle, Emmerdale)

Soap opera들은 워낙 장기간 방영되고, 그러다보니 등장인물이나 스토리 라인도 복잡해서 중간에 볼라치면 내용을 몰라 재미가 없습니다.

제가 학교에서 돌아오는 5시 정도면 호스트 머더가 늘 저녁 준비를 하면서 이 시각 쯤 방영되는 Neighbours(http://www.bbc.co.uk/neighbours/index.shtml)라는 soap opera를 봤었는데 이건 호주에서 제작된 것이더군요.

어쨌거나 내용이나 뭐 이런 걸로 봤을 때는 그냥 시시한 일일연속극들입니다. female oriented된 그런 드라마라고 할 수 있죠.

이런 드라마를 왜 soap opera라고 부를까요?

1930년대 미국의 라디오 방송에서 한 soap company의 후원을 받아 이런 일일연속극을 방송하면서 이런 장르의 드라마를 soap opera라는 이름이 붙여졌다는군요. ^^
